Volunteer in Mission

The United Methodist Volunteers in Mission organization offers many additional ways to serve in Wisconsin, across the country, and even internationally. Here is an opportunity to serve:

In July 2018, Midge Gill traveled with a team of sixteen other volunteers to Baldwin, Louisiana, to the UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) Sager Brown depot.  UMCOR is a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian relief and disaster response globally, and Baldwin is their headquarters for relief supply operations.

Much of the work done in this location is packing a variety of emergency response kits, enabling the organization to provide immediate assistance.  Midge sewed bags for school kits, and packed the bags with school supplies, including spiral notebooks, paper, scissors, pencils, and more.  She said, “Hygiene kits and cleaning kits were already made by previous teams.  The number of flood buckets (cleaning kits) ready to be sent out just amazed me.”

Making kits wasn’t all she did though.  Her team picked okra, built a butterfly garden, and weeded flower beds on the campus.  They also volunteered in surrounding communities.  After sorting clothing donated to a drug abuse treatment center, they listened to residents tell their stories. They toured a family violence crisis center, and Midge recalled, “The silhouettes on the wall of the center were a somber remembrance of people from the area, mainly women, killed in domestic violence incidents.”  Her team helped area senior citizens clean their apartments and played bingo with them too!

Midge has already committed to go to Chatham, Illinois in August, to work in a smaller distribution center at Midwest Missions.  In the summer of 2020, she’ll be back in Baldwin at Sager Brown.  She highly recommends such a trip, and would be happy to share more of her experience and answer questions at [email protected].

“Thank you for the scholarship for the mission trip. It was well used and much appreciated. I encourage others to go on such trips and make use of the scholarship money that’s available from the church.”   ~ Midge Gill
